Disc Review: Sam Ryder – “Nothing But Space, Man”

Last spring, Sam Ryder charmed himself and Great Britain by finishing second at the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin. Had Ukraine not been voted first for obvious reasons, he would have left the arena with the gold trophy.

Not only because of an infectious hit song, flashy outfit and TikTok’s already devoted fan base, but also because of the unabashed joy the 33-year-old radiated from the stage. It’s no coincidence that he’s described as a golden retriever—he looks like Mr. Peanutbutter in “Bojack Horseman.” Not a brand he wanted to wash off either. “Cold is the enemy,” he said An interview with The Guardian in May.

The debut album is like that Successfully: It’s not very cool. Unfortunately, it’s not unique enough to fully compensate for that. Excited to finally reveal his musical legacy and accomplishment, Sam Ryder embarks on a journey of his own passion. He runs between acoustic ballads, weird EDM sprinkles, rock choruses, charming Bowie flair and Ed Sheeran trying to sound like there’s no tomorrow.

Sam Ryder is saved by his amazing voice, though, and on “Somebody” and “Ten Ton,” he sticks to what he does best: feelgood songs that flirt with retro pop and soul in a suitably compelling way.

Best Song: “Ten Ton”, “Whirlwind”
