AirPods and Mac accessories are said to get USB-C before 2024. Before it becomes a requirement in the European Union.

At the end of 2024, it is very likely that there will be a requirement that many gadgets with charging ports use USB-C if they are to be sold within the European Union, and of course this also applies to Apple. In his latest newsletter, Mark Gurman wrote that a range of Apple products like AirPods and Mac accessories will start using USB-C late next year. These devices include AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max as well as Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad.

So it doesn’t look like Apple will wait until the last minute with its transition from Lightning to USB-C.

All mobile phones in the EU should run on USB-C by 2024

Today, the European Parliament voted through the motion meaning that all mobile phones, tablets and similar electronic gadgets should be able to charge with USB-C connectors from 2024. From spring 2026, the same requirement also applies to laptops. This means, among other things, that Apple must provide its iPhones with the ability to charge iPhones using USB-C. Most, if not all, other manufacturers already use USB-C as the charging standard today. How Apple will solve it all remains to be seen. It is rumored that the iPhone will receive USB-C charging multiple times and that many Apple devices, including their laptops, are already charging with USB-C today. In order to carry out the whole thing, official approval of the EU member states in the Cabinet of Ministers is also required.

Pro Max may disappear

Apple may ditch the “Pro Max” model of the iPhone, switching instead to “Ultra” as we’ve seen on many other Apple products. This rumor comes from trusted Mark Gorman, who wrote in his latest newsletter that Apple should follow the naming conventions it started with the M1 Ultra chip as well as more recently with the Apple Watch Ultra. He writes as such: “Based on the current Applex27 pattern, we can expect a revamped iPhone design next year, coinciding with the switch to USB-C and the possibility of a new Ultra model that replaces the Pro Max.” It remains to be seen if the iPhone Ultra will get features that the smaller iPhone Pro doesn’t, for the past two years, the iPhone Pro and Pro Max have had exactly the same hardware aside from the screen size and battery.
