The Italian Brotherhood Party (Fratelli d’Italia) led by Giorgia Meloni and its partner right-wing parties will form a new government in Italy, after securing a majority in both houses of Parliament.

International reaction to the election victory is divided. Within the European Union, there is concern about the policy the new government will pursue, confirms SVT EU correspondent David Poiti.

Right-wing nationalist parties and politicians in France, Spain and Poland, among others, also expressed their happiness with the election results, as did Hungarian leader Viktor Orban.

From the left, the reception was even cooler. Iratxe Garcia, head of the S&D group in the European Parliament, believes it is a “dark day for Italy and Europe”.

Others express themselves more neutrally and make vague statements about hopes for continued cooperation.

“As neighbors and friends, we must continue to work together,” French President Emmanuel Macron wrote in a statement.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said he was “keen” to work towards common goals with the new Italian government. The European Commission wrote in a statement that it hopes for constructive cooperation with the new government.
