A small black hole found in one of our neighboring galaxies. For the first time a new method detects a black hole in a galaxy other than the Milky Way

ESO’s Super Telescope VLT (Large Telescope) detects a black hole in a galaxy outside the Milky Way galaxy, which can detect how black holes affect nearby stars.

This is the first time astronomers have discovered a black hole in the Milky Way using this method. In the past, famous astronomers write that such small black holes were discovered by X-ray observations or by the detection of gravitational waves that form when black holes collide. However, the black hole found in our neighborhood, the Large Macellanic Cloud, is estimated to be too small to be detected using previously used methods.

The currently discovered black hole is located in a star cluster called NGC 1850, about 160,000 light-years from Earth. Sarah Saracino, of the Astronomical Research Institute at John Moores University in Liverpool, England, describes a method used to detect a black hole that is believed to have a mass equal to eleven suns:

“Just like Sherlock Holmes discovers a criminal gang from their misdeeds, we look at every star in this cluster with a magnifying glass in one hand, but try to find some evidence for the existence of black holes, but do not look directly at them. You’re on the way to finding many different groups. “

In the video below, you can observe how astronomers find the “small” black hole in the large Magellanic cloud.
