People are being tortured in Xinjiang. Women are forcibly sterilized. Several UN envoys pointed this out during a meeting, which criticized China’s conduct of Uyghurs.
UN envoys from the United States, Britain and Germany on Wednesday called on the U.N. to discuss the situation in Uyghur, China. The words in the crowd did not diminish.
“We will stand by our position until the Chinese government stops crimes against humanity and the genocide of Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang,” said Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the United Nations.
Human rights organizations Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International attended the digital session, where testimonies from Uyghurs were also presented.
Britain’s UN envoy points out that there is evidence of mass arrests and torture in Xinjiang.
– If you have nothing to hide, contact the UN. Why didn’t the High Commissioner for Human Rights (Michael Bachelet) allow free access? Their German representative at the meeting, UN Ambassador Christoph Husken, said.
China has already criticized the meeting in advance and called on other countries to boycott. The regime denies repression in the region. Detention camps, where at least one million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities are said to be imprisoned, are, in fact, re-training camps for religious extremists, according to Beijing.
“The current situation in Xinjiang is excellent,” the Chinese delegation wrote in a statement.
