Although this year’s World Championship is now over, now is the time to look forward to the next edition. Here’s all we know about Hockey World Cup 2022.
When is the 2022 Hockey World Cup played?
The competition runs from May 13-29, 2022.
Where is the 2022 World Cup?
Finland is the host country and the tournament will be held in Helsinki and Tampere. Matches in Helsinki take place at the Helsinki Arena, while matches in Tampere are currently played at the Tampere Tech Arena under construction.
Teams participating in Hockey WC 2022:
Russia, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, USA, Switzerland, Germany, Slovakia, Latvia, Denmark, Norway, Belarus, Italy, Great Britain and Kazakhstan are participating in the next edition of the tournament this year as well.
Usually two new teams are added before each season. It will be the same team that will take part in the next season as the 2021 season will not play championships in the lower divisions.
Which teams will meet during WC 2022?
Group A consists of Canada, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, Denmark, Kazakhstan and Italy. They will play their matches in Helsinki.
Group B consists of Finland, United States, Czech Republic, Sweden, Latvia, Norway, Belarus and the United Kingdom. They will play their matches in Tampere, which will also be the main host city for the semi-finals and medal matches.
Usually the largest hockey nations have an equal distribution because the highest ranking team ends up in one group, the second highest ranking team is in another group. But as this year’s surprising results have affected the world rankings in many ways, there are still more random teams available for next year’s World Cup. Group B, for example, includes four of the six teams that are generally considered the strongest in the hockey world.
When will Sweden play its matches?
The game schedule for the tournament has not yet been provided, which will be done after the summer.
When are tickets for the matches released?
In the fall of 2021, day tickets for the tournament will be released, which will allow you to watch all the matches played in the same arena on the same day. Before purchasing tickets, you must register your interest, and then there will be a draw, which will finally determine who will be allowed to buy their tickets. In February 2022, tickets for individual matches will be released.
However, for now, you can buy various VIP packages that will give you a full day in the spirit of hockey. All tickets are sold through IIHF’s website.
