With Apple releasing a beta version of iPad OS 16.1 that skips version 16.0, code-diggers who dissect programming into the operating system have discovered clues to what could come in iOS 16.1. Apple hasn’t had time to release iOS 16.0 yet, but since Ipad OS relies so much on iOS, clues are emerging about what might come in iOS in the future.
One such detail that has come up is the ability to uninstall the Wallet app, which was not possible before. Wallet is one of the pre-installed applications that were part of the operating system, but that may change.
There’s no official explanation for why Apple appears to be on the verge of making such a move for an app required for Apple Pay, among other things, but it’s likely a move to deal with increasingly common accusations of exploiting a payments monopoly position.
Apple already has some changes about this that are said to be coming in iOS 16, such as that third-party browsers should be able to use Apple Pay, and that the Tap to Pay functionality should work with third-party apps.
Wallet is just another app in the group of apps that became deletable in previous betas, such as the Health, Find, and Clock apps.
