– Right here, in the archipelago around our coast, that’s where they solve the tasks, for example, the coastal defense operation, if there is someone who threatens us, says Sweden’s head of the navy Eva Skook Haslam.
He, Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson (M) and Defense Minister Paul Johnson (M) were on Monday as part of the major armed forces exercise Aurora 23, as the Swedish amphibious unit trained alongside the Royal Marines in the Stockholm archipelago.
Skook Haslam says Sweden has the most islands in the world and is home to the Swedish amphibious unit, which has a unique ability to operate in such an environment. But even the Royal Marines are good at operating in that environment, he added.
– It was a very useful exercise. Let’s see what advantages and disadvantages we have in each other’s systems, says Skook Haslam.
Great Britain was one of the countries that offered security guarantees to Sweden in anticipation of NATO membership. Prime Minister Christerson insists that Great Britain has plenty of units that can be deployed quickly in a crisis situation.
Defense Minister Paul Johnson said the presence of British soldiers on board Aurora 23 was an expression of the great commitment to Swedish security.
During Aurora 23, the Finnish amphibious unit also participated.
