Britain is ordering five new warships for its navy, 10 Downing Street has announced. Prime Minister’s staff refers to threats from Russia.
“Russia’s actions put us all at risk. As we provide the support the Ukrainian people need, we draw on the breadth and depth of UK expertise to protect ourselves and our allies. This includes building the next generation of British warships,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement.
The order for BAE Systems is worth 4.2 billion pounds (52 billion kroner) and will mean 4,000 new jobs.
The main purpose of the frigates is submarine hunting and three frigates are already under construction as part of the “Type 26” project. Among other things, the warships will protect the British Navy’s aircraft carrier fleet.
All eight warships will be operational by the mid-2030s.
“Putin’s behavior, which has no place in the international community, cannot be normalized,” Sunak said in the statement.
