Morgan Plus, you ask? Yes, just listen.
There is no car manufacturer like the English company Morgan Motor. Founded in 1910, it has retained many of the automotive aesthetics of the time. Including a wooden skeleton, under the aluminum shell.
Morgan builds true luxury sports cars and only manages about 850 cars a year. In other words, it is not easy to get a copy out of your hands.
Now hopefully the ride gets better, as Morgan has begun a collaboration with Sennheiser, responsible for the audio system on the latest Plus Four and Plus Six releases.
We promise that the sound experience is superior to anything previously done in any Morgan model, with a unique soundscape that “takes sound quality to a new level.”
While Morgan has 112 years behind it as an automaker, Sennheiser is also no slouch with 75 years of experience.
The result blends a clear focus on design with technical excellence in a system that boasts Sennheiser’s signature sound. Fits perfectly with the sports car manufacturer’s unique blend of craftsmanship, adventure and analog driving experience
This is according to the press release.
Ambeo technology provides immersive sound
Sennheiser claims to create a magical illusion of a soundscape in front of passengers, with sound quality that is simply breathtaking. An algorithm called Ambeo Contrabass should provide amazing bass response, with both definition, attack, and depth. And that from a system as compact and efficient as possible, among other things to add as little weight as possible.
We’ve already had good experiences with Ambeo technology, including from the extremes Ambeo speaker – which provide the best surround sound we’ve ever heard from a soundbar. But also from the new cheaper Ambio Plus, which we were pleased to hear during the launch in Berlin in September. We can imagine this technology in the car cabin working wonders.
Eight speakers
The system has eight sensors: four “normal” tweeters in the door- and rear panels and four invisible tweeters, three behind the dash and one in the bottom panel for bass reproduction.
Without specifying it, we can imagine that the four invisible speakers are kind excitement. In other words, they are diaphragmless speaker elements, which instead use the surface of the dashboard itself as a speaker diaphragm. It’s the same principle Sony applies to its OLED TVs, where the entire screen acts as a speaker (the undersigned journalist has a similar tease on the wall behind the sofa, recreating the surround channels in the TV room).
Such exciters require a good DSP to operate, otherwise the frequency response will be catastrophically poor. In the case of Morgan / Sennheiser, all elements of the amplifiers are controlled by a dedicated DSP with audio processing signed by Sennheiser.
The integration was carried out in line with Morgan’s philosophy of properly bringing modern technology into its vehicles. A highly discreet cabin is achieved and the use of invisible woofers ensures that excess weight is kept to a minimum. A must of course for a sports car.
Sennheiser exclusive brands
You can see that there is a Sennheiser tag on the subtle logo on the speaker grilles on each door. The grille design itself is inspired by the famous Morgan nostrils that are stamped into each hood on Plus models. Each speaker grille features a satin-brushed design and matches other interior trims on the vehicle.
the prices
Although Morgan makes few cars, prices are surprisingly reasonable: a Plus Four with 258hp and 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds starts at £71,830, about 900,000kr. The more powerful Plus Six with 340 horsepower and 0-100 in 4.2 seconds starts at around 90,390 lb-ft, or about 1.1 million kr.
Of course, we want to do the listening test at Sennheiser facilities as soon as possible.
