Sanctions imposed on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich led to the sale of the club he has owned since 2003.
As a result of Abramovich’s association with Vladimir Putin, all of his assets were frozen, and Britain’s room for maneuver became minimal. Instead, the sale of the bank The Raine Group has now been dealt with with British authorities, and on Friday evening the deadline for a bid for the club was passed.
Abramovich says no to bidding
As a result of the penalties imposed on him, it is clear that Abramovich will not receive any money from the sale of the club. On the other hand, he does his best to influence sales because, though he is not involved in the process, he always has to agree to the sale.
According to the Daily Mail, Abramovich does not intend to sell the club to anyone who comes from a country that has imposed sanctions on the Russian oligarch, which makes it difficult to sell to stakeholders from both the United States and Britain.
If the Abramovich streak remains, it means that stakeholders such as Todd Boehle, the Ricketts family and Nick Candy will be prevented from buying the club.
On the other hand, the sale to the Saudi media group will continue, but it seems that such a deal has been approved by the British authorities seems unlikely at the moment.
However, Abramovich’s move could prove costly to Chelsea and force the club under the management of the authorities.
