Netflix has just discontinued its cheapest ad-free subscription, “Basic,” in the US and England. The subscription allows users to watch all movies and TV series in standard definition, without ads, for 99 SEK per month. It now appears that users will either have to watch ads to cut costs or pay for a more expensive subscription.
IGN wrote that users can no longer sign up for a “basic” subscription. However, those who already have Basic can keep the subscription until they change their plans or close their accounts.
Right now, the cheapest ad-free option is Netflix “Standard” which costs 129 SEK per month, and which allows two simultaneous streams. The cheapest option now is Standard with Ads, which costs seven dollars (70 kroner) per month.
In the past, Netflix discontinued its Basic service in Canada. The purpose is to either force users into an ad-funded option or a more expensive ad-free subscription. The United States is often a sign of what is to come for the rest of the world.
Netflix has approximately 1.5 million subscribers in the US who subscribe to its standard ad-supported plan, which is not yet available in Sweden.
