The Linux Foundation launched a massive mapping project with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and TomTom, which they called the Introduction Maps Foundation.
The Overture Maps Foundation is an open source project whose goal is to share and use map data in various mapping applications. The Overture Maps Foundation itself writes about the project on its newly opened website:
“Acquiring and organizing high-quality, up-to-date, comprehensive map data from various sources is challenging and expensive. Introduction aims to integrate map data from multiple sources including Introduction members, civic organizations, and open data sources.
Foreground map data will evolve over time. Initially, we will release base layers including building information, road and administrative information. To support next-generation map products, Introduction will steadily improve the coverage, resolution, and accuracy of existing data, as well as introduce new layers such as places, routing, or 3D building data. “
Overture Maps plans to begin releasing map data as open source sometime in the first half of 2023. Whether the initiative to create maps with open source data could threaten Google Maps’ Google Maps service in this region remains to be seen.
