Starmer met King Charles at lunchtime where he was officially asked if he wanted to form a government and said yes.
After two-thirty Swedish time on Friday, according to tradition, he was greeted with cheers when he delivered a speech outside 10 Downing Street in London.
There he started thanking Rishi Sunak for being in power.
– We recognize his determination and hard work as a leader. But now our country has voted for a change, Starmer said, then continued:
– Even if you voted Labour, and especially if you didn't, I want to say straight away: My government will work for you. Politics can be a force for good, and we want to show that.

Earlier on Friday, Rishi Sunak announced his resignation as leader of the Conservative Party in a farewell address to the nation.
– To the country, I want to say, sorry. I have heard your anger and disappointment and I take responsibility for this loss. I am resigning, he said.
He has also apologized to his party colleagues who are now leaving Parliament.
Sunak is due to meet Britain's King Charles as per tradition to resign his prime ministership.
