Carmack criticizes the company’s efficiency.
John Carmack has announced that he is leaving his virtual reality consulting role at Meta/Facebook. On his Facebook page, the former identity software developer wrote a message highlighting the decision to leave his post. Much seems to revolve around the company not being as efficient as he would like.
“This is the end of my contract in virtual reality,”
“Quest 2 is exactly what I wanted to see from the start.”
“Everything could have happened a little faster and worked out better if different decisions had been made, but we’ve built something very close to the right thing.”
“The issue is our efficiency.”
“We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we’re constantly sabotaging ourselves and wasting effort,”
“There’s no way to encapsulate this; I think our organization works half as effectively as it makes me happy. Some may scoff and say we’re doing a good job, but others will laugh and say ‘Half?’ Ha! I’m a quarter efficient!
“It’s been a struggle for me. I have a voice on the highest levels here, so I feel like I should be able to move things along, but I’m clearly not convincing enough. A big part of the things I complain about end up turning my way a year later or Two years and accumulating evidence, but I’ve never been able to kill the stupid things before they cause harm, or set a direction and a team actually stick to it. I think my influence on the sidelines has been positive, but it’s never been a major driver.”
The letter as a whole can be read as written on Carmacks Facebook page. He also wrote on Twitter about his frustration with Meta and Facebook.
John Carmack left ID Software in 2013 to focus on Oculus and VR. He was later hired by the Meta when Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014. In 2019, he stepped back and only served as an advisor to Oculus while focusing on artificial intelligence.
Do we think Carmack could go back to square one and start making plays again?
