The infected fox apparently showed no symptoms when it was killed during a hunt this summer.

The infection situation is better than in recent seasons. But the first outbreak of bird flu this season has been found in both wild and domesticated birds, with a fox also found to be infected.

It is the State Veterinary Institute, SVA, that provides the situational picture regarding bird flu.

12 wild birds

The season is counted from 1 October and an infection has been found in twelve wild birds in Blekinge, Skåne, Kalmar, Stockholm and Östergötland – mainly different species of geese affected.

In recent months, the number of reports made to the SVA about sick and dead birds has been relatively low. However, the number is now increasing, and according to the SVA, this trend is believed to continue until March.

Great danger in Skåne

– We consider that the risk of infection in poultry is highest in Scania and given the cases of wild birds in the fat-intensive poultry counties of Kalmar and Östergötland, the risk is considered higher here as well, commented Malin Grant, epidemiologist at SVA.

As for poultry, the first infected animals were discovered on January 7 in the municipality of Schoppo in Skåne in an animal breeding facility for chicken production. As part of infection control, it was decided to euthanize 48,000 animals.

Injured fox in attack

A fox that was shot while hunting in August was also found to be infected, although it did not show any symptoms of the disease. The truth is that the condition dates back to last season, but the animal was only analyzed during the current season.
