When Sven-Goran Eriksson met the Queen, the obvious question was:
Who is your favorite player in the England national team?
– He liked it “because it looks so clean,” says Svens in his summer talk.
It’s been a really great coaching career Sven-Goran Ericsson He is considered one of the most important Swedish football coaches of all time. After great success with several clubs in Sweden, Portugal and Italy, he was given a huge honor in 2001 when England called.
royal meeting
Svens was captain of the England national team and captained the national team in three tournaments until 2006. He still describes this time today as the most fun and challenging of his life.
If you are the captain of the league in England, it is also normal for you to come and visit the royal house. He remembers well his meeting with the Queen of Great Britain Queen Elizabeth II.
One day I was invited to lunch at Buckingham Palace and it was a beautiful and strange experience. There were about ten guests in addition to the royal couple, says Svens during his visit Summer talk at P1.
Halfway through the meal, the royals talked to the guests who sat to their right and in the middle of lunch they changed sides and only spoke to those who sat to their left. It was strange, but that was it.
favorite player
When the Swedish coaching icon had the opportunity to speak to the royal couple, he of course led the conversation to the sport. And he was very curious about who the Queen’s favorite player was.
When I spoke to Prince Philip, he spoke of polo, which I know nothing about. She talked about football that he had no idea in principle, says Svens in a summer talk.
– But then the Queen asked who she thought was the best player in the national team. Then she said Michael Owen. I asked why then? “Because it looks very clean,” she replied. So what does that mean…
Sven-Goran Eriksson also highly appreciated Owen in the national team.
In the England national team, there were some players who really stood out. Michael Owen was one of them. He was a real goal thief, he could last 89 minutes and you didn’t see him on the field but then he made 1-0 in the 90th minute. Inside the penalty area, he was a real goal thief. Unfortunately, he had a shorter career than he should have already, due to injuries. He was vulnerable to injury when he got a little older.
