Four teams and 20 ponies from Great Britain and Sweden have gathered in Scandinavia for training. After a two-year pandemic hiatus, the Gothenburg Horse Show is now back and the program includes the Mounted Games. The team competing for Sweden is Torslanda – Alleby Ridklubb. The club is also involved in organizing tournaments.
– There will be an amazing atmosphere here in the arena and the Swedish team is fantastic, so I think they will have a great chance to win, says Caroline Clayson from Alibi Riding Club.
Relay at high speed
Mounted Games, also known as Gymkhana, can be described as relays with ponies. It is a team sport and riders complete a series of different disciplines from horseback at high speed.
The sport has been an invitational competition during horse shows for over 30 years, however, the sport is not very big in Sweden.
– We want it to spread more outside the Gothenburg area and to the rest of Sweden. We have a team that struggles all the time and suddenly a new club appears. But, unfortunately, someone disappears, says Carolyn Clayson.
He fought for the sport in Sweden
One constant feature with Alibi during the matches was coach Nisse Adolphson. According to Caroline Clayson, she took Mounted Games to Scandinavia and was interested in spreading the sport in Sweden. Nisse sadly passed away from cancer last spring, and this year will be the team’s first trip to the arena without him.
– It’s special. It’s always been his thing, so it’s really hard to be without him. But we hope to make him proud where he is now.
Mounted games are scheduled for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Sweden will face three teams from Great Britain.
