A shortage of vegetables in England

There is currently a shortage of some fruit and vegetables in the UK. This prompted grocers Asda and Morrisons to introduce limits on how much their customers could buy.

Asda has announced that its customers are only allowed to buy limited quantities of tomatoes, peppers or lettuce when shopping. And Morrisons have introduced a limit on how much cucumber their customers are allowed to buy.


In recent days, pictures have been shared on social media showing fruit and vegetable shelves of grocery stores empty without certain items.


Due to bad weather


The shortage is also affecting Ireland, Spain and northern parts of Africa due to extreme weather with floods, snow and hail. Cargo ships have been delayed due to storms in the region.


At this time of year, most of the fruit and vegetables consumed in the UK come from these regions. 95 percent of all tomatoes and 90 percent of spinach come from there.


May be long winded


The shortage is expected to last at least a few weeks until the country’s own growing season begins and retailers find other places to buy.
