Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea FC for 20 years, has been sanctioned by the UK over his links to Vladimir Putin. His assets have been frozen and now his club is up for sale.
Together, Williams and Hamilton have decided, according to Sky Sports, to contribute around SEK 245 million to one of the bidders, Sir Martin Brayton.
Today at a press conference ahead of this weekend’s race in Imola, Italy, Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton was asked if his interest was genuine.
– When I heard about this opportunity, I thought, wow, this is one of the biggest opportunities you can have, to be part of something of this magnitude, said Hamilton.
Like Chelsea
Hamilton was asked at today’s press conference if he liked Chelsea.
– yes.
Is there any truth to the (purchase) rumors?
– yes
His sister forced him to like Arsenal
Hamilton also spoke about what has baffled some – isn’t Hamilton an Arsenal fan?
The Formula 1 star says that in his youth he was persuaded by his sister to stay at Arsenal, but he often went to watch Chelsea with his uncle.
– My sister hit me hard on the arm and said I should support Arsenal. I remember becoming an Arsenal fan when I was 5-6 years old. My Uncle Terry is a huge Chelsea fan, says Hamilton, so I went to matches with him.
Chelsea is one of the most successful clubs in the world and when I heard about this I thought it was one of the greatest opportunities you could have, to be part of something so big.
