The ban was actually voted on two years ago and also received approval from the European Commission. Now it comes into practice. This means that all flights of less than two and a half hours will be banned and on a route where the train is an alternative.
They include routes such as from Paris to the cities of Nantes, Lyon and Bordeaux, the BBC reports.
Critics said the ban was only symbolic and that the government should instead focus on changes with real solutions.
The ban proposal was put together by President Emmanuel Macron with the French Citizens’ Agreement on Climate Issues.
French consumer association UFC Que Choisir has encouraged the government to extend the limit to four hours, it said BBC.
“On average, an aircraft emits 77 times more carbon dioxide than a train traveling on these routes despite the fact that the train is cheaper and the lost time is only 40 minutes,” said a spokesperson for the aircraft.
