The semi-final match will be against England if Sweden defeats Belgium.
Georgia Stanaway’s dream overtime goal against Spain catapulted the host nation through to the quarter-finals.
– It was a goal to be proud of and a day I will remember, Stanway says BBC.
After an uneventful first half, things heated up at the start of the second season between England and Spain.
Athena del Castillo was substituted at the end of the first half and produced a solid performance entering the penalty area in the 54th minute.
Once there, Athena del Castillo played Esther Gonzalez and the striker was brilliant as she received the ball and cut it into the far corner.
Protests over the receipt
England struggled to create chances and Spain looked poised to reach the semi-finals at a major tournament since 1997. But the equalizer came when Alexia Russo headed Ella Ton to make it 1-1 from close range in the 84th minute.
The Spanish national team players were furious after the equalizing goal, as the heart of defense, Irene Paredes, fell in a confrontation with Alexia Russo, but the goal was allowed despite the large protests.
Stanway is the champion of England
The game went to overtime where Georgia decided Stanway with a dream goal.
Six minutes into extra time, a shot was fired from outside the penalty area and Sandra Panos was unable to reach the goal.
– I wasn’t quite sure she’d get in, Stanway says BBC about the target.
It was a goal I can be proud of and a day I will remember. We’ve put in an enormous amount of work and we’re going to enjoy this moment before we move on.
England won 2-1 and reached the semi-finals, where they faced the winners Sweden and Belgium.
– It’s unrealistic, that proves the level we’ve reached. We had a setback but we will be back. Mission accomplished, now we’re focusing on the semi-finals, says Georgia Stanway.
