The leaders of the three countries announced the new “Ocos” partnership. During a joint digital press conference late Wednesday evening (Swedish time).
Under the partnership announced by US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the US and UK will provide Australia with the technology and opportunity to distribute nuclear submarines, Reuters reports.
There will be regular meetings
The three countries will maintain a schedule of meetings in the coming months to coordinate cyber issues, advanced technology and defense to better meet current security challenges. However, during the meeting they stressed that Australia would not use nuclear weapons but would use nuclear powered systems for ships, in order to protect itself from future threats.
We all understand that it is absolutely necessary to ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region in the long term, says Biden.
eyes on china
Washington and its allies are looking for ways to distance China’s growing power and influence, particularly the military buildup, pressure on Taiwan, and deployments in the disputed South China Sea.
The three leaders did not mention China and senior Biden administration officials, who told reporters before the announcement, said the move was not intended to counter Beijing.
However, the Chinese embassy in Washington responded by saying that countries “should not exclusively build blocs that target or harm foreign interests.”
