Backlash: Microsoft’s Activision purchase of Blizzard blocked in UK

UK Competition and Markets Authority Puts the spokes in the wheel For Microsoft’s acquisition of gaming company Activision Blizzard. Skepticism in the cloud gaming segment is said to be the primary reason. Microsoft already has a strong position in that area, and Activision’s acquisition of Blizzard would severely impact other players and limit players’ freedom of choice, the British authority writes.

The deal, valued at $69 billion, was already announced early last year. Since then, Microsoft has fought an uphill battle to convince competitors and regulators alike to buy in. Today’s decision in the UK is seen as a major blow to the deal, which Microsoft CEO Brad Smith says will be appealed. Check out the tweet below:

So far, neither the EU nor the US have had the last word on whether or not they plan to give the green light to the deal. These separate processes are held on May 22 and sometimes in August respectively.
