The Scottish regional government has been trying for years to secure a new referendum on independence. One argument is that Scotland wants to remain part of the EU and therefore wants to leave Great Britain and rejoin the EU.
It was British central government policy that the 2014 referendum settled the issue for the foreseeable future. Then 55 percent voted against independence for Scotland.
The Scottish regional government’s main argument was that leaving the EU turned the whole issue upside down. In 2016, a majority of voters in Scotland voted yes to remain in the EU, making the Brexit process work against their will.
Concept for freedom
Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the regional government, has said a referendum on independence should be held next year. He was, however, ready at the same time to come from HD in London, and declare that the next general election in Great Britain should be regarded as the verdict of the electors in the matter.
Sturgeon and her SNP party already have strong approval ratings from the public. Last year the SNP went into the election promising a referendum as soon as the pandemic allowed. As a result, the Independents won a majority in the Edinburgh Parliament for the first time.
Now the next step seems to be delayed. Prime Minister Rishi Chung will have to call the next UK general election, and he won’t have to until 2025.
