Haitians in Texas migrate back to Mexico

At most, more than 12,000 people crossed the Rio Grande border at a campground in Del Rio, Texas, over the weekend.

But on Monday, many chose to cross the border in Del Rio again, this time back to Mexico, Reuters reports.

Across the border along the Rio Grande is the border town of Ciudad Acuña, which is expected to receive many immigrants.

Other immigrants have begun moving toward the coastal city of Tampico to find new ways to enter the United States.

Haiti is the poorest country on the American continent and has become increasingly unstable during the summer as President Jovenel Moise was assassinated and a major earthquake killed thousands.

US authorities have evacuated a total of 3,300 migrants since Friday, and several planes are now expected to continue daily deportations.

The first three planes carrying hundreds of Haitians landed in Port-au-Prince early Sunday. Several planes are expected to take off on Monday.

Then-US President Donald Trump introduced the possibility of quickly rejecting immigrants without having time to seek asylum, known as “Title 42,” as a health measure during the onset of the pandemic.

Last week, a judge ruled that this should not apply to families, but the ruling won’t become final until two weeks from now. It also resumed the government of incumbent President Joe Biden.
