The accident took place in one of the last turns before the end. Sonnen, driving a Ford M-sport Ford, drove the car behind the car on a grassy roadside slope. This caused the car to spin and then go down a steep slope.
– I had a good feeling until then but I lost the line and hit the ramp and got off and damaged the safe cage in the car, says Teemu Suninen and adds that he doesn’t believe in restarting tomorrow.
“Disappointment”
It has long been uncertain whether the Ford M-sport will start. The team has been working hard to obtain finances for the World Cup season, and since last week, the British team’s premiere has been threatened by travel restrictions between the UK and France due to the pandemic.
Team manager Richard Milner was really disappointed after a botched start.
We’ve worked hard for the past four weeks to get here and also tested for four days, then that’s the reward, says Millener to the WRC and goes on:
– It really is disappointing. It is good to set a time like this, but our goal was to take two cars to the end and we did not even succeed in that in one period.
SVT expert Jonas Cross understands Milner’s disappointment.
I’ve never seen Richard Milner so frustrated and actually so angry before and I get him. This is a heavy blow for the team of course and also for Sonnen of course and it could have consequences for continuing because he doesn’t have a full season, says Jonas Kroos.
Think about management
Estonian Ut Tanak won the first distance of 20.59 km. Kali Rovanberra from Finland came second, and Britain’s Elvin Evans came in third. Then Tanak cemented his lead in the rally with another victory over the distance, in the second division, the world champion of 2019 was three-tenths faster than Rovanbera, and Evans again in third place at a distance.
Ahead of Friday’s stage, Tanak is 3.3 seconds ahead of Rovanbera. Elfyn Evans is 8.5 seconds behind Tänak.
Engine problems for Solberg
Oliver Solberg in WRC2, the only Swede, had problems in the first leg when he lost power in the engine but came back hard in the second leg and hit a third time between the R5 cars.
Solberg is fourth in his class, just five seconds off the podium.
– It was an amazing day, it was tough. We are four in total, but we had a problem with the engine at first and then the second leg was fine. “ So we’re just having fun and driving, ” says Oliver Solberg after two driving distances.
