Steve Walton at Hardware Unboxed tested the gaming performance of the new Zen 5-based Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7 9700X on Windows 11 build 24H2 and compared the results to the performance of the processors on build 23H2.
Gaming performance on AMD's Ryzen 9000 processors has fallen short of expectations. The company previously promised that the new processors would deliver an average 9 percent performance boost over their predecessors when Microsoft releases the 24H2 update for Windows 11.
After benchmarking the processors in 43 games at 1080p, Walton found that both CPUs performed significantly better in 24H2 than in 23H2. The Ryzen 7 7700X achieved a 10 percent increase in gaming performance in 24H2, while the Ryzen 7 9700X got an 11 percent boost. Steve Walton isn’t sure he’s ever seen a performance boost of this magnitude.
What Walton found less impressive was that in the 23H2 build of Windows, the Ryzen 7 9700X was only 1 percent faster than its 7000-series predecessor when he tested the processors in the same game. In the 24H2 build, the new processor gained 2 percent.
Walton also points out that the results contradict AMD's previous claims that Zen 5 processors would have an average 9 percent higher gaming performance than Zen 4 processors.
While the difference in gaming performance between the processors is very small, it still bodes well for the Ryzen 7 9700X, which looks set to get a significant performance boost when Microsoft releases Windows 11 24H2.
