It was one of the big talking points during the Men's World Cup in Qatar at the end of last year: the “One Love” bandage.
England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland had planned to use the bandage during their matches, but the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) stopped it at the last minute, by threatening sporting penalties such as yellow cards and suspension. .
In July and August, the next major FIFA tournament awaits us: the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
However, England captain Leah Williamson, who led England to European Championship gold in 2022, is determined to send a message at the World Cup, especially since the 25-year-old wore the rainbow armband during last year's home European Championship.
– The message sent at the European Championship, in which all the teams participated, was amazing. In all the photos where we raise the dent, the rainbow bandage is included. “It's a good platform to showcase the values we stand for, so I hope it's the same (in the bathroom),” she says.
Williamson continues:
-We are never shy about expressing what we stand for, as we are a team that promotes equality. We will continue, we are not only influencing football, we are also trying to have a positive impact on society, and this is one way we can do that.
The FIFA World Cup will be held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.
