The tournament has been held since 1963, and is equivalent to the men's Davis Cup.

– Until 1994, the tournament was called the Federation Cup, then the Federation Cup until 2019 and now the Billie Jean King Cup.

The current name of the tournament is named after the former American world number one tennis player, Billie Jean King, who won six Wimbledon titles, among others.
