A setback in Indian rescue efforts JB

Thursday will be the big day for the 41 people trapped, who were stuck nearly two weeks ago in a road tunnel in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand.

The day before, the rescue department announced that there were only about twelve meters left for the vigorous exercise, and that they thought they could do it in one day. But the drill encountered harder materials.

-We are a few meters away from the men’s exit. They’re fine, but the rock drill broke. Arnold Dix, who works at the site, says it is now being repaired and is scheduled to start operating tomorrow, Friday Times of India.

– Since men feel healthy, it is important not to stress, because if we do, it can create big problems.

He hopes, according to the newspaper, that the work will be completed on Friday.

Several tons of soil, cement and rubble have been removed from the tunnel since it collapsed following a landslide on November 12. But rescue efforts are slow due to falling debris.

On Tuesday, for the first time, they were able to get hot food through a small tube. Bearded and exhausted men can be seen in photos taken by a camera brought inside.

Once a large enough hole has been dug, the idea is to get the men out on stretchers in 45-metre-long tubes. Outside the tunnel, 41 ambulances – one for each trapped person – stand ready to take them to hospital.
