The dispute between the European Union and several vaccine-producing countries is about to escalate. Astra Zeneca states that it will have to halve its shipments to the European Union in the next few months after the United States, India and the United Kingdom stop exporting medicines.
This means that Sweden receives approximately 3.3 million fewer doses, and the government may now need to revise the goal of getting vaccines for everyone during the first half of the year.
Now it turns out that a total of 9 million doses are stored in the three countries – doses not even in Astra Zeneca’s contract with every country, Aftonbladet writes.
Richard Bergstrom: “We must be solution-oriented”
The idea was that the drugs would be sent to the European Union, but the three countries changed, according to Aftonbladet.
The United States can stop exports that are important to the country, and the United Kingdom has a clause with vaccine companies that says they can stop shipments from leaving the country, Vaccine Coordinator Richard Bergstrom tells the newspaper.
– But we paid for the product, in addition to that they received 3.3 billion Swedish kronor in support from the European Union to be able to produce the vaccine, and now we are not getting it here, he says to Aftonbladet.
Earlier on Friday as I mentioned The New York Times About 30 million doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine remain untouched in the United States – because the country’s Medicines Authority has yet to approve the drug.
– There is a risk that this will escalate. Hope we can avoid trade wars. I hear how there are powers in the European Union that want us to deal with hard gloves – but I believe more in diplomacy. “We have to be solution oriented now,” Bergstrom tells Aftonbladet.
