Olof Stefansson Research Group Examines the risks to the mother and baby during pregnancy and childbirth.

– In maternity care, we study the factors that contribute to a woman’s labor being prolonged and that increase the risk of cesarean section, bleeding, and that the newborn suffers from a lack of oxygen during birth. The goal is that even before labor begins, we should be aware of factors that we know are unfavorable and thus reduce the proportion of women experiencing poor labour, says Olof Stefansson, professor and chief physician at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital.

It is difficult to predict before birth which woman will experience postpartum hemorrhage, because it often occurs in women with no known risk factors. In the study, we used Swedish registry data and, with the help of measurements from the partogram, could show that there is an association between the length of the opening stage of labor and the risk of postpartum hemorrhage, says Linnea Ladfors.
