This year, the number of TBE cases reported in Västra Götaland was somewhat lower than last year. It is the reduction in Skaraborg that gives mainly lower numbers. For example, in Lidköping, with Kållandsö, only one case of TBE has been noted this year.
It’s very positive news,” says Petr Nolskog, assistant infectious disease physician, at the workplace at Skaraborg Hospital in Skövde.
80 people in Västra Götaland sought care after being infected with the tick-borne TBE virus. Over the past year, the number was 108 cases. Exactly how many of the 80 who have come from Scaraborg are yet to be fully registered.
But Peter Nolskog can already state anyway that Scaraborg has far fewer TB cases this year, than in previous years.
– this while Bohuslän has what it used to be and Gothenburg a little more so than it usually has. We also have a few statuses around Borås.
Lidköping and especially Kållandsö usually accounts for the majority of cases of tick-borne TBE, and over the years many Lidköpings have had to seek medical care after infection. Last year, there were six people from Lidköping who needed care and seven or eight cases in neighboring municipalities.
Peter Nolskog and Infection Control couldn’t find any reason for the decline in cases in Skaraborg in particular this year.
– I don’t remember that we had a severe drought in Scaraborg. I also don’t think it’s because people are suddenly vaccinated. It won’t happen overnight. We’ve been working on vaccination recommendations for decades. I don’t understand why there are fewer cases in Skaraborg.
