After last year’s top list – fewer TBE cases in Skåne

Of the 12 recorded cases, about half were infected in Scania.

– We have two cases in southeastern Skåne in Sandhammaren and in Ringjön, says Matthias Waldeck, Skåne district infection control doctor.

If you compare with other regions, for example Stockholm and Östergötland, Skåne has had quite a few cases of TBE over the years. The highest record emerged last year, with 19 cases of tuberculosis, according to Matthias Waldeck.

– In previous years, we had an average of 8-9 cases in Skåne. TBE has not been around for longer in Scania than in other regions.

Older adults are a risk group

TBE is spread by ticks and transmitted by tick bites. Those infected usually have mild symptoms, such as a fever. But there are those who have serious symptoms, and they are mostly elderly.

Many elderly people have weakened immune systems and are a significant risk group.

Although there have been fewer cases of tuberculosis this year, says Matthias Waldeck, you should still be on your guard when you are outside in nature.

– With mild weather, there is still a risk of tick bites. You must be vigilant and watch your clothes.
