Sea spia is found on the west coast – threatens the ecosystem

Sea vomit is a form of Japanese sea urchin. It is often spread by ships and is found today in a number of European countries, such as Great Britain, the Netherlands, France and Ireland.

In our neighboring country Norway, a sea spit was found at Engøysundet in Stavanger in 2020. Today it covers nearly 50 percent of the sea floor there. It has also spread to more places in Norway.

The sea spit got its name from its appearance. It spreads in large numbers and displaces plant and animal life, threatening the ecosystem.

Now the first discovery has been made in Sweden, reports Nature morning at P1.

It has the ability to spread.

The discovery was made when Annette Helberg, an employee of Naturum Kosterhavet in Kosterhavet National Park off the coast of Bohuslän, was snorkeling. The DNA results confirm that it is a sea spiae.

Annette Helberg thinks it’s sad that this species was also discovered in Sweden.

It is a species known as an ecosystem engineer. It changes the ecosystem in which it occurs. It has the potential to spread over large areas very quickly, she tells Naturmorgon.
