Business Insider reports that Alphabet plans to create a technology-focused company to develop quantum computers, a type of computer believed to be capable of great things in the future.
According to Business Insider information, Alphabet’s Quantum Sandbox@Alphabet division will soon be turned into a corporation. The Sandbox was something that Alphabet started at the beginning of 2020 and they are said to be operating near Alphabet’s Experimental Division X, the division formerly called Google X.
Sandbox should be independent of Google’s quantum AI division. What exactly does Sandbox do, there is not much information about it. Alphabet subsidiary Google is also involved in the development of quantum computer technology. Among other things, according to their own information, both have achieved the so-called “quantum supremacy” as well as the creation of so-called time crystals. You can read more about this in the articles linked below.
There has been a lot of talk about quantum computers in recent years. However, it is believed that the first truly useful quantum computers appeared only at the end of this decade. If they do, they will initially be useful mainly in areas that require very complex calculations. The Singularity Hub has written a bit more about the areas where it was first thought that quantum computers would be used Which you can read more about here If there is a benefit.
