Emissions must peak before 2030, the Chinese regime says now. The country emits the most greenhouse gases ever, and has previously been criticized for being too far in time for environmental targets.
The Beijing government presented an action plan on Tuesday. In it, previous goals are repeated, such as reaching up to 1,200 gigawatts of solar and wind power within this decade. Hydropower, fossil gas and nuclear energy also require continuous investments, it is said, in order to get rid of the worst pollutants in terms of pollution, that is, coal and oil.
The plan is one of several released in the coming days to outline how the Beijing regime intends to go green. Although it doesn’t contain much concrete news, it’s still a sign that China can speed up its actions, having previously said the country’s emissions curve won’t shift downward until nine years from now.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping has not said if he will attend the COP26 major climate summit in Glasgow, which begins this weekend. But he gave no notice that was interpreted to mean that he would not come. Xi Jinping has not traveled outside China since the COVID-19 epidemic broke out in earnest.
