EDF Renewables continues expansion of storage batteries in the UK. Therefore, the Finnish technical team will once again provide facilities for 50 MW strong batteries.
French EDF is working to roll out a number of so-called multi-energy substations in the UK. Therefore, this time, additional warehouses capable of supplying 50 MW of electricity will have to be constructed. Once again, the Finnish Wärtsilä was chosen as the builder, the company writes in a press release.
Charging support
– Our energy storage technology is an important part of the flexible capacity mosaic needed to balance renewable energy, says Jens Norgaard, director of Wärtsilä Energy’s energy operations in Europe.
Battery storage will support, among other things, the charging of electric cars and the electrification of public transport in the region.
In the past, Wartsila has awarded EDF similar projects in Great Britain. The plan is to build 2 gigawatts of battery storage distributed across 40 different projects.
Currently, Wärtsilä’s total technology base in the UK is over 424 MWh, including an island grid project balancing renewable energy at Lerwick in the Shetland Islands.
Construction of the new battery warehouse will begin in 2023.
