British bus company Stagecoach has placed its largest electric bus order to date. The order consists of 150 double-decker and 20 single-decker buses built with chassis from Volvo and bodies from Egyptian MCV.
These buses will be put into service at Stockport near Manchester, England.
Volvo Buses’ new electric bus chassis BZL Electric (click here) that Volvo will launch in 2021 is built with markets around the world in mind. The chassis requires bodywork by independent coach builders and can be used for both double-decker and single-decker buses. The chassis is 90 percent recyclable.
When it introduced the BZL electric bus chassis in September 2021, Volvo said in its customer offering that the chassis will be marketed where Volvo does not have its own plug-in buses. BZL has been marketed in the UK since inception and has been successful in many markets including Australia and Singapore.
In March, Volvo Buses changed its business model in Europe and ended the production of fully assembled buses (click here). This means that Volvo Buses focuses its production on chassis and, together with external body builders, offers customers in Europe complete city and regular buses as well as touring buses in the premium segment.
For Stagecoach, the deal with Volvo Busser means the company takes another step towards its goal of having only zero-emission buses in traffic by 2035.
