Brand new tram trains that will revolutionize public transport are now being tested on South Wales Metro’s tracks, according to the manufacturer. These are offered by leading manufacturer Statler. The new light rail vehicles can operate on both rail and tram lines and are powered by catenary and battery power.
Class 398 premium vehicles feature spacious, bright and air-conditioned passenger spaces, including six multi-functional bicycle storage spaces, seats for people with reduced mobility and two wheelchair spaces. With a length of 40 meters, CITYLINK tram trains can carry more than 250 passengers and reach a speed of 100 km/h on the rails. Pure premium vehicles are allowed in the UK if used on main roads. Clean trams (eg in Manchester) should have a low floor.
Fast and electric
Transport for Wales recently electrified the first phase of the South Wales Metro and the first light rail trains are now being tested and are expected to be ready for passengers in 2024.
Deputy Minister for Climate Change for Transport Lee Waters noted:
– This is great news. These new tram trains, funded by our £800 million investment in a new fleet, will be electric, faster, have increased capacity and will play a key role in our plans to transform rail travel in Wales.
– New to Wales Tram trains, these vehicles will enable faster, cleaner and more efficient journeys. We are investing £800 million in brand new trains for Wales and £1 billion in South Wales Metro and we want to encourage more people to travel sustainably by renewing our network,” concluded Leigh Waters.
