UK energy consumption is falling, and so is renewable energy

The UK’s energy consumption fell by 4 per cent between June and August 2023, according to a new UK government report. During the same period, the country’s domestic energy production decreased by 7.6 percent and electricity generation from renewable sources also decreased by 4 percent.

The report indicated that primary energy consumption in the UK, based on fuel input, fell by 4 per cent in the three months, compared with a year ago. This is believed to be due to increased energy costs and other economic factors.

Even when the numbers were adjusted for temperature variations, the decline was the same — 4 percent.

The exception is bioenergy

During this period, UK domestic energy production fell by 7.6 per cent. This reduction was extensive in many energy sources, except bioenergy, waste and offshore wind.

Substantial electricity production from UK power producers fell significantly by 19 per cent. This is primarily due to a 48 percent decrease in coal-based electricity generation, a 33 percent decrease in natural gas-based generation, and a 14 percent decrease in nuclear-based generation.

Production of renewable electricity also showed a decline, albeit a modest 4 percent.
