More than 20,000 trucks in the UK are currently operating illegally on UK roads due to a lack of proper vehicle checks, according to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (TVSA). Even in Sweden, trucks are used, for example, with an annual inspection or foreign vehicles that are never inspected in their home countries.
To a parliamentary question on vehicle inspections this week, UK Transport Secretary Baroness Vere said:The DVSA estimates that one in twenty UK trucks drive on UK roads without a proper inspection..” Then they did not take into account what the situation was with foreign vehicles in England.
The DVSA picks it up takes the issue very seriously and focuses on such vehicles during its tests on the road. If these vehicles are found, the case goes to the Transport Commissioners, who can take action against the transport company and its transport permit.
The latest UK Department of Transport figures show there were 406,000 UK-registered lorries in 2021, meaning that if the DVSA’s estimate is correct, around 20,300 lorries will not have an approved inspection.
Baroness Following a review of heavy vehicle tests in 2021r, Vere also said there were no plans to change the current system: “An audit published the same year concluded that truck inspections should continue to be carried out as they are now, as they provide an independent opinion and assurance to ensure vehicles are properly maintained and safety is not compromised.”, writes Motor Transportation.
