NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has released a video showing how the so-called Mars Sample Return (MSR) is supposed to work once it reaches Mars.
MSR is a system of several components whose goal is to retrieve samples from Mars and then send them back to Earth. The MSR consists in part of a Mars lander, where NASA’s Perseverance rover will drop samples it has collected on Mars since arriving on the Red Planet last year. The samples will then be launched from Mars into a rocket-like container that will then dock with spacecraft in orbit around Mars. This vehicle will then return the samples to Earth.
In 2027, NASA and the European Space Agency plan to send to the planet a rover that will be in orbit around Mars. The Mars probe itself is scheduled to be sent in 2028. If all goes as NASA and the European Space Agency planned, samples from Mars could return to Earth sometime in 2033.
