The United Nations Security Council will not adopt a resolution condemning – already condemned by the outside world – the so-called “referendums” in the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine.

Russia – unexpectedly – vetoed.

Asked the Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia, do you really expect Russia to consider supporting such a proposal?

China and India abstained from voting. The two countries were in the spotlight ahead of the vote, abstaining in February on a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. There was speculation that at least India was ready to change its stance ahead of Friday’s meeting.

When the meeting began, US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield said the UN Security Council is there to protect territorial integrity.

– The United Nations was built on the idea that no country should ever be allowed to take someone else’s territory by force, she said.

Although the resolution will not be adopted, it may be introduced later in the General Assembly.
