Japanese aerospace company GITAI has shown off a centaur-like robot that it hopes will one day be able to roll on the moon’s surface.
The robot is called R1 and was developed in cooperation with the Japanese space agency JAXA. It has four legs with wheels and the trunk of its arms is equipped with claws. Below is a clip of what it looked like when I tested the GITAI R1 in a simulated lunar environment at the JAXA Sagamihara Campus research facility.
GITAI and JAXA aim to send R1 to the Moon sometime in the middle of this decade. However, there is no specific date for a possible lunar flight for R1 yet.
