The world’s northernmost regions seem more important than ever. Areas previously seen as peripheral are driving the societal transformation that will shape our common future. exhibition down to the north It features works by thirty contemporary artists from Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Sweden and the United States, as well as from the Sapmi people and other indigenous nations of the Arctic. They examine defining issues of our time and use art as a catalyst for change.

Today’s climatic and environmental changes and problematic colonial history have resulted in the production of artworks that address social, economic, political and environmental challenges across the region. Other works confront the illusion of the northern regions of the world as a remote wilderness and challenge the romantic notion of the Arctic as a homogeneous, untouched land.

Through a large number of artworks in different media, the exhibition traces shared experiences within the region and reflects both synergies and divisions within and between communities and nations around the North Atlantic.
