The young spinners did very well, but they could never outscore India. We are not to blame. It's the batsmen.
This match was full of mistakes and missed opportunities. England must punish themselves for their loss. Winning the toss and batting first on a dry, cracked pitch and then making a total of 353 should have been a winner.
England were struggling with India and should have taken a 100-run lead in the first innings which they could have overcome. The 46-point lead was easy and gave India's experienced and quality players the scent of victory and they achieved it superbly.
England had only 192 to defend. I like Stokes' leadership but I think he made a big mistake in opening the bowling with two bowlers, Root and Tom Hartley. In 25 minutes at the end of the third day, India easily scored an invaluable 40 runs. What is no less important is that it gave impetus to their roles. It was necessary to make running difficult.
Stokes believed that the new, stiffer ball would bounce more and that the higher seam would create more spin. The problem is that unless you're experienced at bowling with a new ball, the coating makes it slip off the fingers, so it's hard to drop it along. When I was playing, players could rub the ball in the dirt to roughen it up and get a better grip, but that's banned now so it's harder for them to control it. I think Stokes outdid himself.
Chasing small totals in the final innings of a Test match has historically proven difficult for many teams because the pitch is usually worn out and playing tricks. Early wickets are an invaluable bonus but it is also essential for the bowlers to hook the batsmen to increase the pressure on the batting team.
Jimmy Anderson is there for the new ball. He dismissed Rohit Sharma in the first innings. One thing about Anderson is that he doesn't run away. He is an average bowler. He should have opened the bowling but in fact the batsmen lost the game and the series.
