It has been eight years since Sweden last won gold in a team race at the EC Long Track. The women won the 4x100m freestyle in Berlin – the same distance where the Swedes are now closing in on a new gold medal.
First out, Sarah Sjöström gives Sweden a big lead in Rome. Although the 28-year-old looked a little lost at the end, the time was so good that it was good enough for an individual gold in the 100m freestyle.
– It was good. I felt I had to fight in the last 20 meters, but it was fun to start the team, Sjöström tells SVT afterwards.
– It’s so much fun to see all the happiness and be a part of sharing it.
Then took Louise Hansen over, Sarah Junevik and Sofia Austedt swam in the final. Sweden had a long lead in a thrilling final.
In the end, Great Britain found it very difficult, but after a strong finish by Sofia Astedt, Sweden managed to hold off the other teams and take silver.
– I don’t know what to say. You’re trained for this, so it feels absolutely sick, says Sophia Astedt.
Great Britain won In 3.36.47, the Swede finished in 3.37.29. The third place is the Netherlands. It was Sweden’s second medal at the Long Course EC in Rome after Sarah Sjöström won gold in the 50m butterfly earlier on Saturday.
