On Tuesday morning, the 42-year-old swimmer took on the demanding challenge for which she had been training for nearly two years. Crossing the English Channel was a charity project where he hoped to raise just under 300,000 kroner.
The English Channel stretches 34 kilometers between France and Great Britain and can take anywhere from 7 to 27 hours to swim.
The 42-year-old, who worked as a firefighter, announced on social media two weeks ago that the swim was being postponed due to bad weather. When he left on Tuesday, June 20, he was initially accompanied by a support boat, but even so, he disappeared after a few hours.
At 14:15 on Tuesday, Kent Police received a report of a missing swimmer in French waters.
Search mission complete – no person found
An extensive search operation was launched, including military helicopters and police boats and naval operations. France and Belgium have also assisted Great Britain in the search for the man.
On Thursday morning, the search for the man was declared over.
The BBC reported that his disappearance was described as an “inexplicable tragedy” by West Midlands Fire Service.
“We’re giving his family all the support we can during this painful time,” said the man’s colleague, Fire Chief Wayne Brown.
